Feeling a bit caught up in the chaos and busy-ness of today’s world? Often, we find ourselves doing more than we ever intended or even wanted simply because the distractions have caused us to lose focus. Let’s take a minute to re-focus and be purposeful in what we choose to invest in this coming year, so we are intentionally doing what we actually want to do; so we are defining our intention for the coming year!
WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR 2026?
DEFINING INTENTION FOR THE COMING YEAR
#1. LIST WHAT YOU VALUE
This requires time for reflection. Take time to make a list of what you value most. Pull in a trusted friend or family member to help you if needed. Think about how you want to be remembered. This often pulls up value terms that you can then list out. If you're having trouble thinking of value terms, don't fret! Reach out to me for my list or click here for one I found online.
Now, pull out the top 10 values that represent what matters MOST to you AT THIS TIME IN YOUR LIFE. Remember what we value changes over time and life circumstances, so be honest and real about this. Spend time praying and meditating over those 10 values. Write each one on a sheet of paper and describe why each one is important to you?
#2. ASK "WHERE SHOULD I INVEST MY TIME AND ENERGY?"
For me, this question looks more like "What does God want me to do right now with my time and energy?" It's about living out your purpose and meaning, and your values help guide you in determining this.
Again, engage a trusted friends or family members to discuss this more. Often taking time to talk this through with someone else, offers clarity and depth. Also, trusted loved ones often have valuable insights that will help guide your answer(s).
#3. WRITE YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
This is very similar to a mission statement developed by a company or business, but its focus is on you specifically. It’s important to keep the mission statement short and honest. The elaboration of the mission statement is displayed in the goals and behaviors you develop and live out over the coming year.
A good template might be: “I will [action] for [audience] by [skills] to [desired result].” (source) Again, think about the legacy you want to leave behind. I want others to know me as this or that.
#4. DEVELOP A FEW OVER-ARCHING GOALS FOR THE COMING YEAR
These goals can still be in the SMART structure for goal development (watch my short video on SMART goals), but they don’t have to be. They are more a statement of the direction you are choosing to put your energy towards, so your mission statement can be lived out. An example might be: “This year, in 2026, I will have lunch with at least one close friend each month.”
Remember, where your focus goes, your energy flows. This is a catchy line, but it simply means that what you choose to focus on becomes your reality. So, what are you going to invest in, in order to help shape that reality? This will require making some adjustments in the coming year, so my actions are more intentional and purposeful.
DO WHAT IS DOABLE!
It is important to our health and well-being that we live out our purpose and meaning, but we have to take time to actually invest in finding out what that actually is. Take time today to really think about what is next for you in the coming year, so you are purposeful and intentional in your actions. That clarity helps protect you from becoming distracted from what is actually important to you!
